GABA is a chemical messenger that helps quiet nerve-cell activity. In laboratory work using rat brain membranes, Selank changed GABA binding in a way consistent with strengthening that signal.

A 2008 study compared Selank in 30 people with medazepam in 32 people with generalized anxiety disorder or neurasthenia. The authors reported similar reductions in anxiety, with additional improvements in fatigue in the Selank group.
